Abstract
Flower and growth responses of Rhododendron obtusum ¢¥Red-1¢¥, ¢¥Purple-1¢¥ and ¢¥White-1¢¥ as influenced by light shade and forcing date were investigated. The first flower initiation was observed in late June in three varieties. It took to form carpels for 28 days in ¢¥Purple-1¢¥, 35 days in ¢¥Red-1¢¥ and 46 days in ¢¥White-1¢¥ from flower initiation. According to decreasing shade level untill 60% of natural light, there were increased in growth, chlorophyll and stomatal aperture whereas the flower bud initiation was delayed two or three days. The buds of flowering of ¢¥White-1¢¥ were decreased about 70 % at 30% light shade, and 12% at 60% light shade, however, all the buds of ¢¥Red-1¢¥ and ¢¥Purple-1¢¥ were opened regaredless of light shade. The flowering forced on Nov. 30 was acclerated about 20 days in ¢¥Red-1¢¥, 14 days in ¢¥Purple-1¢¥ and 25 days in ¢¥White-1¢¥ as compared to forcing on Oct. 30. As light shade was increased, flowering was accelerated 3 or 5 days.
